Ten years after designer Gianni Versace was shot dead by Andrew Cunanan at his home there, the public can now freely tour the infamous mansion for a fee.
Casa Casuarina, which the slain designer bought in 1992 for $2.9 million and redecorated for millions more, has been opened to the public by current owner Peter Loftin.
Initially, Loftin made the house, which was built in 1930, a private club. Then he had rooms rented for overnight stays and events. Now it's a tourist attraction which the curious can look through for only $50.
"It's too magical a place not to share with a wider audience," Loftin says of his decision to open the mansion to the public.
Tours, which should be booked in advance, are offered at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., through Sept. 30. A woman dressed in a Versace gown will serve as tour guide for paying customers.
