One of the first internationally-known Asian models has passed away last week, according to reports.
Sayoko Yamaguchi, who rose to modeling prominence in the 1970s, died on August 14 after a battle with acute pneumonia at the age of 57.
Remembered for her shiny straight black hair with the fringe cut right above her eyes, Yamaguchi debuted on the catwalks of Paris in 1972, then became a well-known name in the fashion world with subsequent appearances on the runways of New York and other major Western fashion centers. One of the major highlights of her modeling career was when Newsweek magazine named her one of the top six models in the world in 1977.
After retiring from the catwalk, Yamaguchi went on to become a stage and movie actress, as well as a costume designer for stage productions.
