Because of an eagle-eyed viewer, cosmetics giant L'Oréal has found itself accused of misleading audiences in its mascara ads starring Spanish actress Penelope Cruz.

The Telescopic mascara ads, which claimed that women could have up to 60 percent longer eyelashes, drew the sharp eye of a viewer, who said Cruz was wearing false eyelashes in the ad to exaggerate the product’s results. She promptly filed a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority, which also concluded that the ads were indeed misleading.

L’Oréal readily admitted that the actress was wearing false eyelashes, explaining that "Penelope Cruz was wearing a few individual false lashes inserted into her natural lashes to fill in the gaps in her natural lashes for a consistent standard of lashes,"

Nevertheless, the ASA has ordered the French firm to put a disclaimer in all future ads, as well as clarify its claim about the 60 percent lash length increase.
