Old Make-Up Can Harbor Bacteria

If you’re in the habit of using old makeup, then it’s time for you to break that habit.

Dermatologists are saying that old makeup could be harboring dangerous bacteria, and the use of such products could lead to skin problems such as conjuctivitus or peri-oral dermatitis, which produces little red bumps that look like acne.

Unlike food or medicine, however, makeup products don’t come with expiration dates, so experts recommend that eye make-ups and liquid foundations, which have the shortest self-life, should be thrown away after just three months. The same goes for powders and foundations that have been opened more than a year ago, since they can also cause problems. Makeup applicators should also be replaced on a regular basis.

On top of all this, experts suggest smelling your makeup. You will know it’s contaminated with bacteria when it gives off an unusual odor.
