London Fashion Week got off to a good start Sunday amid all the issues surrounding the decision of its organizers to use only “healthy-looking girls” aged over 16 in their shows.

Irish designer Paul Costelloe kicked off London Fashion Week, which has some 49 catwalk shows on its schedule, and will feature hundreds of exhibitors, with thousands of TV and radio crews, photographers, buyers and journalists expected to flock to the British capital.

Costelloe’s models introduced the designer’s new autumn/winter womenswear range, which included elegant knee-length coats teamed with sparkly tights and heels.  And in keeping with the “healthy-looking girls” policy, the models, while still slim, do not exactly look stick-thin.

London Fashion Week, which is slated to run until February 16, will feature the latest creations from the likes of Bella Freud, Zandra Rhodes Julian Macdonald, Betty Jackson, Nicole Farhi, Christopher Kane and first-timer Marc Jacobs, the American designer and creative director of Louis Vuitton.
