Primark is starting to feel the fallout from the child labor issue that has dogged the high street retailer recently, with Dame Helen Mirren expressing her intention to not shop there.
While attending the Christian Lacroix couture show this week, the Academy Award-winning actress was quoted as saying, "I won't buy from Primark. It's tempting, but immoral. I'd rather go to jumble sales and buy secondhand than buy slave-labor clothes".
Mirren has been known for speaking her mind out on fashion issues. Apart from the Primark thing, she has also spoken out on the issue of size zero, accusing the fashion industry of turning "a blind eye" to the problem of "horrifically thin" models.
The actress also has a ready alternative for shopping at Primark: She can make her own clothes.
"I make my own clothes, because I never found the kinds of things I liked. My mother taught me how to work a sleeve and make a placket. Of course, those were the pre-Primark days," she said.
