Gap Inc. has hired prominent fashion designer Patrick Robinson to take charge of the design of men's and women's clothing as well as accessories in North America for the slumping retail chain.

The retailer is pinning its hopes on Robinson, who was artistic director for Paco Rabanne in Paris and worked top design jobs at Perry Ellis and Anne Klein, to come up with clothes that consumers actually want to buy.

Gap, which also owns the Banana Republic and Old Navy chains, has been suffering declining sales in recent years. But Gap president Marka Hansen, who is responsible for improving Banana Republic sales, is taking steps to turn the Gap stores around, and this recent appointment of Robinson’s is apparently one of those steps. She said that "Patrick brings broad experience, from high-end fashion to mass market retail, demonstrating his versatility to interpret and create fresh, clean designs”.
