Dorian Leigh, one of the world’s first supermodels, passed away Monday at a nursing home in Falls Church, Va. She was 91.
Leigh is best known for being the face Revlon's famous “Fire and Ice" campaign in the 1950s. Shot by the legendary Richard Avedon, the campaign starring Leigh made the cosmetics line famous.
Apart from the Revlon campaigns, Leigh, who was among the first models who signed with Ford Agency, also appeared on the covers of many magazines such as Look, McCall's and Harper's Bazaar. She was once described by Ford Agency founder Eileen Ford as "truly the best model of our time."
"She instinctively knew what every photographer wanted, and she came alive just at the moment the shutter clicked," Ford said.
That explains why she was a favorite subject of Richard Avedon, as well as other renowned photographers such as Irving Penn and Louise Dahl-Wolfe,
When Leigh retired from modeling in the 1960s, she founded her own fashion modeling agency in Paris, among the first in France.
