Claudia Schiffer, one of the world’s original supermodels, says the supermodel culture is dead. And that singers and actresses are the ones to blame.
The 37-year-old German beauty says the kind of fame that she and Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell had in their heyday in the 1990s can no longer be achieved by the current crop of models, simply because magazines and advertisers are featuring more and more actresses and singers on their covers and ad campaigns.
"In order to become a supermodel one must be on all the covers all over the world at the same time so that people can recognise the girls.
"That is, for now, not possible, not least because the advertising industry is very much taken nowadays by popstars and actresses. Supermodels like we once were don't exist any more."
Schiffer, however, points out Gisele Bundchen as an exception, as the Brazilian supermodel’s face is "well known, her name is recognised - but no other girl occurs to me that people in the street would recognise,"
The supermodel is no longer as active in modeling, but she is currently working again with legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld, this time on a champagne ad campaign.
Yea, i wish i was as pretty as her!
