Beijing Issues Fashion Rules For Olympics

The Beijing city government has issued etiquette booklets among its residents that outline, among others, how to dress and behave appropriately for the duration of the 2008 Olympics, which begins this month.

The move, which is quite typical of the strict laws that govern this country, advises residents from what to wear to what not to eat too much of. Sounds silly, but you can bet the government will be very strict in implementing do’s and don’ts such as: shaving daily for men; not walking around with bare chests; not wearing white socks with black shoes; not fighting over who gets the bill in a restaurant and not eat too much garlic.

Fashion rules for women will also be implemented. For the Olympics, "Young girls can wear skirts three centimetres to six centimetres above the knee - but never too short. For middle-aged and older women, the skirt should be at least three centimetres below the knee."

No word yet if any of these rules will be applied to visiting athletes and officials as well.
