Galliano To Make Kiddie Clothes For Diesel

Diesel has forged a partnership with designer John Galliano to create a line of childrenswear for the Italian label.

Galliano, who is chief designer over at French fashion house Dior, inked a five-year licensing deal with Diesel for an entire collection designed to cater to girls and boys aged four to 14.

"Galliano likes to play and create fairy-tale worlds even for adults”, Diesel big boss Renzo Rosso told fashion bible WWD. “Imagine what he can do for kids".

Rumors are rife that Diego Della Valle, who has just acquired the fashion house of Elsa Schiaparelli earlier this year, has reportedly approached British designer Giles Deacon to take the helm at the legendary house and help bring back its glory days.

The Italian business mogul has been on the lookout for a designer for Schiaparelli, and had been in talks with Roland Mouret to occupy the position. Talks with the French designer, however, have reportedly fallen through.

The proliferation of snakeskin products this fashion season has earned the ire of animal rights activists, saying the use of snake skin is cruel, unregulated and is driving certain species towards extinction.

"The skins industry has been pushing itself as a fashion product for some time now. Then Vogue puts it in the magazine and it is fashionable" says Clifford Warwick, a reptile expert and a consultant biologist with the Animal Protection Agency.

Chanel Artistic Director Jacques Helleu Passes Away

Jacques Helleu, the man responsible for the House of Chanel’s iconic ad campaigns, passed away Friday after a long illness. He was 69.

For more than forty years, Helleu served as artistic director for Chanel, and was at the helm of the house’s cinematic and fantasy-themed advertising, featuring the likes of Catherine Deneuve, Ali MacGraw, Candice Bergen, Nicole Kidman, Kate Moss and most recently, Keira Knightley.

Theron, who won a Best Actress Oscar for the movie "Monster" in 2004, was chosen, signed a multi-year deal with the brand.  A Breil spokesperson said the actress was chosen "not only for her natural beauty, but because she epitomises the modern woman; a mix of sensuality and determination, sophistication and down-to-earth attitude, elegance and simplicity".

The house of Gianfranco Ferre has a new creative director in the person of former Bill Blass designer Lars Nilsson. The Swedish designer will take over the position left behind by Ferre, who died from a brain hemorrhage in June.

Armani Partners With Samsung For Mobile Phone

Giorgio Armani is venturing into consumer electronics, this time joining forces with South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. in creating, among others, an LCD television and a mobile phone.

At a news conference Monday morning, the Italian designer unveiled a cell phone the size of a credit card and bearing his name. The multifunction phone, which will be pretty slim at 10.5 millimeters thick, will be on sale in Europe in November.

Stefano Pilati has just signed a new multi-year deal with YSL, effectively quashing rumors that he will be leaving his post as creative director for the French couture house.

According to fashion bible WWD, Pilati, who was first appointed by Tom Ford as head of womenswear in 2000, has received an offer to take the place of legendary designer Valentino, who just recently retired as head of his namesake label, but opted to pass up the job, which eventually went to former Gucci designer Alessandra Facchinetti.
